Bank Indonesia held its benchmark BI-Rate at 5.75% on 21 October 2026, but the detail most headlines skipped is a 25 basis point rise in the deposit facility rate, from 4.75% to 5.00%. That is the floor of BI's rate corridor, and according to Bloomberg via The Edge Malaysia it was raised to keep returns on rupiah assets attractive and to draw inflows.

The call was not obvious. In a Bloomberg survey of 38 economists, 19 expected a hold and the other half expected a hike. The rupiah crossed 18,000 per US dollar on the day, which matters for anyone who prices bitcoin in rupiah.

Web3 Week Asia, the crypto and blockchain event in Jakarta on 11-12 November 2026, is 20 days away as of 22 October 2026. This is the macro backdrop Indonesian crypto users carry into it.

Decision. BI held the BI-Rate at 5.75% and the Lending Facility at 6.50% on Wednesday, 21 October 2026, after a two-day meeting on 20-21 October.

The overlooked move. The deposit facility rate rose 25 basis points to 5.00% from 4.75%, which narrows the gap to the BI-Rate from 100 to 75 basis points.

Liquidity. The rupiah reserve requirement for conventional banks falls from 9% to 7% in two steps: 8% on 1 November 2026 and 7% on 1 December 2026.

Rupiah. Rp17,985 per US dollar on 20 October 2026, a 0.61% depreciation from end-September according to BI, and about Rp18,005 after the decision according to Bloomberg.

Bitcoin. US$83,404.81 at 08:00 ET on 21 October 2026 according to Fortune, which is roughly Rp1.50 billion at BI's Rp17,985.

What BI actually changed

The headline says hold, but the package is mixed. Raising the deposit facility rate lifts the lowest return a bank earns on parking rupiah at BI. The corridor between that floor and the 6.50% Lending Facility shrinks from 175 to 150 basis points (6.50 minus 4.75, then 6.50 minus 5.00).

At the same time, cutting the reserve requirement frees funds. Bloomberg via The Edge Malaysia puts the amount at more than US$10 billion for bank lending. BI also raised its incentives for domestic non-deliverable forward hedging, which lowers the cost of hedged foreign funding, according to the Wall Street Journal via MarketScreener.

Lavanya Venkateswaran of OCBC sees the reserve cut as a pre-emptive step against tighter liquidity if more foreign capital leaves. Jason Tuvey of Capital Economics says officials are struggling to decide whether to prioritise the rupiah or growth, and that mixed messages could hurt credibility.

Why the call was split

Surveys disagreed. Bloomberg: 19 of 38 economists expected a hike. Bisnis, citing BIG Consensus Insights: 8 of 14 expected a hike, 7 of them to 6.00% and one to 6.25%. The Wall Street Journal: 2 of 9 expected a hike. These are different panels, so they are shown as a range and not combined.

The pressure is external as well as domestic. BI named Middle East tensions, tighter US monetary policy and foreign investor sentiment in stocks as drivers of the rupiah. MSCI has proposed downgrading Indonesia from emerging-market to standalone status, which Bloomberg says triggered the worst stock-market slump in nearly three decades, with the final decision expected in June 2027 according to the Wall Street Journal.

Inflation was 3.28% in September 2026, up from 3.19% in August, according to the Wall Street Journal. That sits inside BI's 2.5% plus or minus 1 point target for 2026 and 2027, which is 1.5% to 3.5%. BI had raised rates by 100 basis points earlier in 2026, from 4.75% to 5.75%, and has held since July.

Rupiah-priced bitcoin: the arithmetic

Bitcoin in rupiah equals its US dollar price multiplied by the exchange rate. If the dollar price stays flat, a 0.61% weaker rupiah raises the rupiah price by 0.61%, because 1.0061 times the old price is the new price.

At US$83,404.81 and Rp17,985, bitcoin is Rp1,500,035,508, or about Rp1.50 billion. At Rp18,005 it is Rp1.5017 billion.

Nexo reports that bitcoin traded between US$80,000 and US$87,000 over the past month and was down about 1% in October. That one-source figure is attributed, not verified twice.

The honest counterweight

The move in bitcoin is not explained by BI. Bitcoin rose 2.64% between 08:00 ET on 20 October and 08:00 ET on 21 October 2026 according to Fortune. Nexo calls the rise price-led and modest. No source reviewed ties it to the BI decision.

A hold is not a statement about crypto. The BI statements reviewed for this article do not mention crypto. OJK, not BI, publishes Indonesian crypto transaction data, and no study reviewed links BI policy-rate changes to Indonesian crypto volumes.

The data shows one decision, not a trend. Rupiah and bitcoin levels are snapshots from different timestamps. Whether the higher deposit rate pulls in foreign money cannot be seen yet, and ANZ still expects BI to raise to 6.25% at an uncertain date, so the hold may not be the end of the cycle.

Indonesia crypto: what to watch next

The next scheduled input is the US Federal Reserve. Its target range is 3.75% to 4.00% after a quarter-point rise on 16 September 2026, according to CME Group and FatTail. The decision comes at 14:00 ET on 28 October, which is about 01:00 WIB on 29 October 2026.

Futures-implied odds of an October hike are below 20% according to Bloomberg, and 94 of 100 economists in a Reuters poll expect a hold, as relayed by FatTail. Nexo puts the chance below one in six. All 100 Reuters respondents expect a hike in December, a forecast and not an official number.

For Indonesia crypto users the practical reading is simple: a stronger dollar or a hawkish Fed puts pressure on the rupiah, and rupiah-priced bitcoin moves with both prices. BI named tighter US monetary policy as one of the rupiah drivers.

Frequently asked questions

When and where is Web3 Week Asia 2026?

Web3 Week Asia 2026 takes place on 11-12 November 2026 in Jakarta, Indonesia. It is a two-day crypto and blockchain event covering markets, regulation, infrastructure and venture investment across Southeast Asia.

Did Bank Indonesia change the BI-Rate on 21 October 2026?

No. Bank Indonesia held the BI-Rate at 5.75% and the Lending Facility at 6.50%. It raised the deposit facility rate by 25 basis points to 5.00%.

What is the deposit facility rate and why does it matter?

It is the rate Bank Indonesia pays on banks' deposits at the central bank, so it sets the floor of the corridor. A higher floor raises the lowest return on rupiah placements, which BI says supports rupiah stability and inflows.

How does the rupiah affect bitcoin prices in Indonesia?

Bitcoin in rupiah is the US dollar price multiplied by the exchange rate. With the dollar price unchanged, a 0.61% weaker rupiah makes bitcoin 0.61% more expensive in rupiah.

When is the next US Federal Reserve decision?

The decision is due at 14:00 ET on 28 October 2026, about 01:00 WIB on 29 October 2026. The target range is 3.75% to 4.00%.

Methodology: Bitcoin in rupiah was computed as US$83,404.81 multiplied by Rp17,985 (Rp1,500,035,508) and by Rp18,005 (Rp1,501,703,604); the prices come from different timestamps, so the result is approximate. The corridor width is the Lending Facility minus the deposit facility rate (6.50 minus 4.75 = 1.75; 6.50 minus 5.00 = 1.50). The 2.64% bitcoin rise is Fortune's comparison of two 08:00 ET prices.
